![]() beautiful Lake Arenal and Arenal Volcano Rafe and Rambo waiting for us to catch upĪs we entered the primary forest, the scenery quickly turned into dense vegetation. The mountain air was crisp and cool, and I felt like I was breathing new life into my lungs. Rambo and his friend frolicked along the trail along with us, loping after each other, rolling in the dirt, and looking back every so often to make sure we were catching up. My fear and apprehension quickly melted away as we plodded up the side of the mountain with the most amazing open view of Lake Arenal and the Arenal Volcano to our side. Rafe helped hold my horse still as I clambered awkwardly onto her back, and then the three of us set off, with his dog Rambo at the helm. Lilander was feeling under the weather when we arrived, so my friend Helen and I set out with his father, Rafe. I felt like I was going to get thrown off with every jerking step it took, and now I’m about to sit on the back of an animal twice its size when I myself have only grown about a foot. The only other time I had come even remotely close to horseback riding was in elementary, when I was plopped on top of what I now realize was probably a miniature mule. By the time we got to the stables though, I was just a little bit nervous. ![]() ![]() It seemed like a good idea at the time, seeing a beautiful waterfall and the Arenal Volcano on horseback. Lilander Horse Tour was one of the many options provided when we arrived at our boutique hostel Essence Arenal, about 45 minutes out west of La Fortuna. However, what put me at unease was the thought of riding horses. My shoes were still wet from waterfall rappelling a few days before, and they refused to dry despite me putting them in front of, and eventually inside the unfortunate fireplace of the common lounge. We had only a short, uphill trek from Essence Arenal to get to Lilander’s, but what can I say. I arrived at Estable Appaloosa with burning thighs, damp shoes, and a healthy dose of apprehension.
